Below ground and in the frame is where a mistake can be expensive and slow to put right. A pile that vibrates a neighbouring wall, a drain run through an unmarked cable, a core drilled through post-tensioned reinforcement or a scaffold that fails in wind can each produce a claim worth many times the value of the contract.
Insurers tend to look closely at these trades. They will usually ask about depth of work, methods, proximity to other buildings and how underground services are located, and some apply conditions such as permit to dig or hot works requirements that need to be followed on every job for the cover to respond.
